The Mind Behind the Design: Stephanie Long

Stephanie Long hails from the Rocky Mountains of Utah, where she studied Fine Art at Utah Valley University and Southern Utah University. She worked as a print production artist before finding her niche in web site design during the late 1990’s. Stephanie moved to Marin County in 2000, and has been working for WebSight Design, Inc. ever since.

stephanielongWhat is your role at WSD? Creative Director. My job ranges from pushing pixels around until they look just right, to helping our clients with branding and marketing.

What is your most challenging daily task? – We have clients in several different time zones — some even in Europe! So I need to be flexible enough and available enough to launch site updates at odd hours. I can easily say I’ve been at my computer all 24 hours of the day, at one point or another.

What is your favorite daily task? – I like combing through my morning email, and getting all the small stuff out of the way, so I can figure out which big blocks of time I have to work on actual design. I love it when I can get a big chunk of uninterrupted time to really get into the creative flow.

What do you consider the best possible working environment? – Any dog-friendly office with lots of sunny windows. You know, like WSD.

If you didn’t have to work, how would you spend your day? – Remodeling my mid-century modern fixer-upper. But I’d still probably push pixels around, because I enjoy it and I like the satisfaction from a project well done.

Favorite project you’ve worked on at WSD? – Clients really make the project for me. The folks at Santana.com are super nice and great to work with. Gene Kilgore at Ranchweb.com always puts a smile on my face. Lori Becker at ATBLaw.net sometimes calls me “Tootse,” and that just makes my day every time. Any time I get to interact with someone who appreciates the work WSD has done and can make a real human connection, those become my “favorite” projects.

What is your greatest accomplishment outside of work? – That’s a good question. I guess I don’t rest on my laurels enough to say for sure. I’m an avid mountain biker, so right now my greatest accomplishment is making it to the top of Pine Moutain without “dabbing.”

Mac or PC? – PC. My brother’s an economist, and he’d kill me if I didn’t get the best value for my money.

Favorite Sausalito lunch spot? – I like to get a salad or sandwich from Mollie Stone’s, and then sit outside somewhere in the sunshine to eat.

What website do you visit most often? HouseOfTurquoise.com. It’s an interior design blog with lots of photos of home decor in my favorite color. It’s a great burst of visual happiness that I use to start my day.

Favorite quote? – “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.” – Edward Abbey
